Not Lists
Hot Lists (from HotorNot)…
My first reaction: Cute! (er, sorry, Hot!)
When I went to browse the logos, I felt turned off. I couldn’t bring myself to pick a single one… yes, I like Gap style. I buy Tommy Hilfiger. I use a Nokia phone. I have travelled to Spain. But do I define myself by these things? NO. And more than that, I WILL NOT.
Is this the distillation of myspace/facebook/adolescent social linking culture? We define ourselves and others by identifying and recognizing the same global corporations? which we choose to identify with because other people (”everybody” or “celebrities”) identify with them?
I am what I buy? What does that say if I’m poor? Or have eclectic taste?
Don’t even get me started on my feelings about the overall Hot or Not concept. Sure, let’s write people off with a quick click of the link. Let’s forge long-lasting relationships based on a single image. Grrrrrr.
NOT.
