I didn't read your whole post, kinda too long for me, but for a netbook tip:
Firstly, their awesome. Some keyboards take adjustment. If you can try it out first; all the better. Remember, not all (maybe none?) have CD drives. That kinda shocked me when I got mine. :)
check out Lifehacker. They've got links to tons of real good open source programs that will accomplish almost everything you need (u know - open office, etc.) that you can keep on the netbook or on a flash drive.
